Supporting Dual Language LearnersWorking with Young Dual Language Learners: Deconstructing the Myths, Applying the Research and Exploring the Benefits
This session provides an overview of the current research on working with young dual language learners. Come explore the realities and myths of second language learning. Focus will include the benefits of bilingualism, how to support home language development and an examination of school readiness data for dual language learners. Set Two. Promoting Home Language and Literacy Development for Young Dual Language Learners his session examines hands-on strategies for supporting Spanish literacy development for dual language learners. Come learn how to create interactive storytimes and discover hands-on activities for helping children learn letters and print concepts. Focus will also include how to work with families to support language and literacy learning at home. Set Two. Advocating, Mentoring and Coaching: The Role of a Community Champion for Dual-language Learning Come explore how to be a champion and advocate for young dual language learners. Topics will include how to mentor and coach other early childhood educators, elements of the coaching process and ways to be an advocate in the community. Together, we can promote equity and excellence for all children! Set Two. School Readiness for Dual Language Learners: Examining Effective Teaching Practices for Promoting English Language Development Come examine research-based strategies to promote children's vocabulary development in English. Explore dialogic reading techniques as well as hands-on ways to create language rich environments. Emphasis will be given to working with infant & toddler dual language learners. Advocacy ideas for supporting dual language learners will be developed. Set Two. Letters, writing and rhymes: Engaging DLLs in literacy times Come learn how to promote literacy knowledge for young dual language learners from birth-five. Hands-on activities that promote letter learning, phonological awareness and early writing will be examined. The more sensory-oriented the experiences are, the more engaged the children are. Be prepared to get messy and have fun! Set Two. Examining Culturally and Linguistically Relevant Assessment Strategies for Dual Language Learners; Translating Assessment Results into Effective Practices. Developmentally appropriate assessment of dual language learners is crucial to ensure we are supporting home language and English language development. Come learn how to ensure we are assessing in a culturally and linguistically responsive way and intentionally using the assessment data. Set Two. Back to top |

Can We Talk? - Communication between babies and care givers forms the foundation of early language and literacy development. In this session, participants will learn to respond to baby's cues and understand the basics of creating literacy rich environments for infants. Early Words Session Two: Again! Again! - Toddlers are always on-the-go as they try to understand the workings of their world. In this Early Words Language and Literacy 2014 session, participants will learn about literacy rich environments for toddlers and gain the basics of engaging busy little ones in language and literacy activities. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments & Curriculum; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler Early Words Session Three: Leap into Language & Literacy - Language and Literacy development is essential for children of all ages and backgrounds. Come and learn how to encourage language and literacy development for the children in your program by focusing on the Five Literacy Practices (talking, reading, writing, singing and playing) identified and adapted from the Every Child Ready to Read curriculum available through your local library. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Human Growth & Development; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool Early Words Session Four: The Magic of Children’s Literature - Books can transport us to magical places! This session will offer a basic understanding of how to incorporate developmentally appropriate books in to the early care and education setting as well as an understanding of how to read books to young children. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments & Curriculum; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool Early Words Session Five: Snuggle Up & Read: Partnering with Families to Support Literacy Development - Parents play a critical role in helping children to develop language and literacy skills. This session will offer basic information regarding barriers and solutions to parent participation in children's literacy development. Ideas for strengthening parent involvement in care and education programs will also be presented. Early Learning Workforce and Leadership DevelopmentEmerging Leaders Connecting With Early Learning Hubs
Overview of Oregon's early learning system, professional engagement, and growing leadership capacity for the early care and education workforce as well as elements of supportive and effective mentoring. Participants develop plans to recruit and mentor regional leadership action teams. Personal, Professional & Leadership Development, Human Growth & Development; 10 hours Creating A Diversity of Learning Opportunities in Training Sessions for Adults This session explores the characteristics of adult learners and training strategies that meet adult needs. Participants reflect on current training challenges and identify techniques and strategies to address those challenges. Personal, Professional & Leadership Development; 3 hours PreK - 3 Alignment: Strategies for Successful Use of the Early Learning and Kindergarten Standards Resource To Facilitate Transitions Between Early Childhood and Kindergarten Classrooms This session considers characteristics of successful PreK - 3 systems and how they are realized in local communities. Alignment between PreK and Kindergarten standards and practices are evaluated through examination of Oregon’s Early Learning and Kindergarten Guidelines. Participants develop strategies for supporting children's transition from early childhood to kindergarten environments in developmentally appropriate ways. Families & Community Systems, Learning Environments & Curriculum; 6 hours Professional Leadership and Advocacy in a New Era of Early Childhood Education Stacie Goffin, in her book, Early Childhood Education for a New Era (2013), states that the field of Early Childhood Education is in desperate need of “Fieldwide Leadership,” defined in part as “moving a field forward as a more viable, coherent, accountable, and respected field.” Key questions related to field definition and essential leadership are discussed and avenues for personal and collaborative action are identified. Personal, Professional & Leadership Development; 3 hours Growing the Profession Exploration of professional identity, purpose, and responsibility in the field of Early Care and Education. Session includes leadership development work and results in regional or community action plans to foster increased professional engagement and build community support for ECE.
